Post subject:  G55 firmware compatibility

Hi guys

Recently a few G55's arrived at our factory with firmware v2.630 already loaded on the unit. One of our technicians then went ahead and changed the firmware version back to 2.600, which was specified in our documentation as a minimum requirement for our Application software.

Now the unit boots up with the following error message:
"System initialization: Error reading from flash"
"Locking this machine due to ERROR..."

We are unable to reboot the machine in Download-mode with the old "Hold-3-buttons-down-while-powering-up" method... it keeps booting up in this error state.

Is there something else we can do to save our hardware?

PS: in the meantime we have qualified our Application software with firmware v2.630 and it is programmed as such, but we still have a couple of these 'brick'ed units in stock :(

I am not sure what caused your units to lock up. I have gone back to 2.60 from 2.63 several times without major incident. (Normally we recommend that people don't downgrade firmware).

To recover your units, please do the following:

Connect the G55 to a PC with Qlarity Foundry. Ensure that the G55's COM1 serial port is attached to the PC. In Qlarity Foundry go to the Download screen and select the Serial tab. Press the [Induce Bootloader] button. Now reboot the G55. After a few seconds, Qlarity Foundry should report that the bootloader was entered. (You may have to cycle power a couple of times on the G55).

Once in the bootloader, type "eP;" in the transmit box (omit the quotes) and press [Xmit]. The unit should report that it is erasing the parameter block. Try rebooting the unit at this point. With luck everything will be fixed. If not, repeat the procedure to enter the bootloader and type "eK;" This will erase the firmware from the unit. You can then use Qlarity Foundry to reload the 2.63 firmware (using serial).

If these steps don't recover your unit or you are having difficulty with them, please call us at 801-466-8770 and ask for Ron Lloyd and he can help you further.

Hi Jeremy

Thanks. Erasing the Parameter Block did not fix the problem, but erasing the Kernel/Firmware did the thing.

Thanks for your quick response and help on this.
